I’m not a natural born runner and I didn’t start running until I was past the age of 40. In school I was picked last on most teams and came in dead last during track workouts. You could say I wasn’t really athletic at all. I danced ballet for quite a few years and loved to be around horses. THEY ran. Me – not so much. You can’t say I didn’t try; I attempted running a few times. But, those attempts started and ended on a treadmill in a gym, where I felt like a hamster in a wheel. In my 20’s I started exercising on a regular basis to get in shape. I became a Jazzercise instructor and personal trainer, but eventually lost interest and started looking for a new challenge.
In the Fall of 2012 I was inspired by several friends to train for the Clearwater Iron Girl 5k. It seemed that everyone around me was running, and it was contagious! My first pair of running shoes was a bright pink pair of Asics. They would carry me through the first year of my running adventure. Today this pair sits in my garage. I refuse to throw them out, because the dirt and blood stains are a beautiful reminder of how far I’ve come.
